Abandoned Airport in Sukhumi ⋆ Russian Urban Exploration

In front of me is an abandoned airport in the village of Babushara near Sukhumi.

Before the war, the airport was an important transportation hub, where flights were made in many cities of the USSR, and helicopters flew in different settlements of Abkhazia.

Sukhumi Airport is capable of receiving any passenger aircraft with a mass of up to 125 tons of airbus class.

August 11, 2008 during the war in South Ossetia, at the airport for the first time in 15 years landed military transport aircraft from Russia, more than three dozen of IL-76, delivered the paratroopers and military equipment.

This is famous Yak-40 – the airplane of President Eduard Shevardnadze, who flew during the war in Sukhumi in 1993. He could not fly away on it, the plane could be knocked down.
